UNDP: Tensions in the Middle East could push 32 million people into poverty
New York, April 13 (Hibya) – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) stated that the global impacts of military escalation in the Middle East could drive up to 32 million people into poverty.
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) published new projections on the impact of military escalation in the Middle East on the global economy.
According to the statement, current tensions put more than 30 million people in 162 countries at risk of poverty.
It was noted that in the worst-case scenario, this number could rise to 32 million.
The report highlighted that the effects of the conflict extend beyond directly affected countries and are particularly concentrated in nations dependent on imported energy and with fragile economies.
It was stated that rising energy and food prices place a heavier burden on low-income countries, with the Gulf region, Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and small island states facing higher risks.
UNDP also emphasized the importance of implementing targeted cash support programs to protect poor and vulnerable households.
