Joint statement by European leaders on peace for Ukraine
Juneau, August 16 (Hibya) – Following the meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, French President Macron, Italian Prime Minister Meloni, German Chancellor Merz, UK Prime Minister Starmer, Finnish President Stubb, Polish Prime Minister Tusk, European Council President Costa, and European Commission President von der Leyen issued a joint statement.
After U.S. President Trump’s meeting with Russian President Putin in Alaska, European leaders – Macron, Meloni, Merz, Starmer, Stubb, Tusk, Costa, and von der Leyen – made a joint statement.
The statement said that President Trump shared the details of his August 15 meeting in Alaska with Putin with European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
European leaders welcomed Trump’s efforts to end the war in Ukraine and to achieve a just and lasting peace. The joint statement emphasized that Ukraine needs “ironclad security guarantees” to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The leaders noted that Russia has no veto power over Ukraine’s membership in the European Union (EU) and NATO, and that only the Ukrainian people can decide the future of their country.
The statement also said that pressure and sanctions on Russia would continue until peace is achieved.
European leaders stressed that Ukraine would continue to receive unwavering support in its efforts to protect its security and vital interests, both for itself and for Europe, on the path toward peace.
