Dar: Assessment on India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty
Islamabad, August 19 (Hibya) – Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar, gave an assessment regarding India’s unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty.
In a statement from Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs it was said: “Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Dar addressed the Anglo-Pakistani Lawyers Forum regarding India’s unlawful attempt to unilaterally suspend the Indus Waters Treaty.”
The statement noted that this action constitutes both a red line and an existential threat to Pakistan’s 240 million citizens:
“In his speech, the Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister stressed that the 1960 treaty, brokered by the World Bank, which manages 80% of Pakistan’s freshwater resources and sustains the lives of 240 million people, cannot be unilaterally suspended. He highlighted the critical importance of the treaty for Pakistan’s water security and ecological stability.”
